Sol Campbell wants to join Newcastle United

### Campbell - Newcastle his preferred destination

Sol Campbell has today came out and told Sky Sports News that he wants to join Newcastle United. Campbell who is a free transfer after leaving Notts County after only one game, is hoping for a switch to Newcastle, after he settles his contract dispute with his former club. It’s quite random news and it will be interesting to see whether Chris is interested in signing him. Only a few months ago, Newcastle were reportedly interested in securing his services but it’s understood that his wage demands were too high and opted for the League 2 side.

He said :

‘I have been approached by several clubs and, yes, it is correct to say that Newcastle are one of them,’ he said.

‘People might be surprised to hear me say that I would be very interested in a move there, but I have my reasons.

‘Also, Newcastle are a big club and could be heading back to the Premier League. It appeals.

‘If we can sort it all out at the tribunal I would hope to be playing within weeks from now.

‘I am training every day with Arsenal, feel fit, as fit as ever, and now I really need some matches.

‘But to sort out the mess at Notts County, a Football League tribunal seems to be the only way out.’

We really do wonder if this guy is good enough because his debut against Morecambe was a complete disaster, and that’s two divisions below us. Mind you, he considers himself good enough to be playing Premier League football.

There’s no doubt that he was an influential figure under Harry Redknapp at Pompey but since then he’s completely disappeared off the scene. I can remember the day he arrived at Notts County, claiming that he was hoping for a place in Fabio Capello’s World Cup England squad.

Is this guy good enough for Newcastle’s defence or is Chris even really considering him?

Comments welcome 🙂

This guy has his motives, yes. His lass is from the North East so thats one I suppose, money is another motive, I think thats safe to say. However Im one of those supporters who if a player turns down my club in the past then I wouldnt want him here now that it suits him. I believe we were after im before he joined Pompy, then again when he joined Notts County. He saw fit to turn us down twice because he had his own agenda (Money) but all of a sudden he's itching to join us? No Thanks Sol, jogg on son!

Totally agree with Dondatta13, he's only in it for the money & we don't need those sort of players in our squad, especially at 34yrs old, he's had his day, time to move on me thinks!!! In his day he was a good solid defender but why would we take on a 34yr old, when would he play, who would he replace unless either Tayls or Colo got injured, he's too slow now & should have stayed at Notts just for his pension fund!

His only motives are his girlfriend has family up here and he's just bought a dirty big hall outside of newcastle which is being restored. If he wants to come offer him a pay as you play deal - lets say 10k a week with bonus based upon appearences.

It doesn't matter what his motives are, he brings experience, quality, leadership and will add depth to our squad. Of course we should go for him on a free. We aren't in a position to be picky. If we break down and assess the motives for most in and outs then im sure you will find that 95% of these transfers have money at the core. That is the world we live in. We are currently a Championship side playing awful football with top management that don't give a toss about us. We should count ourselves lucky that ANY player wants to join us at the minute. Sign him up, if it works, fantastic. If it doesn't then we move on. Also, it is very unfair to blame him for Notts County's loss on his debut. You could see he was trying to lead the defence, but those piss poor players simply didn't get it. One man cannot make a four man defence. As Bassong proved last season, and Beye the season before.

I think that we should learn from mistakes of the past few seasons and stay away from the big egoed 'in it for the money players'. Last season Bassong was our best player, this season its Smith and Enrique, so i think we should stick to the motivated youngsters and the never say die sort of players. Thats what this league requires. Campbell didnt get relegated so wont have a point to prove, he will play thinking hes too big for this. However, we need another centre back in as Simpson and Khiz are not very good together and Taylor and Colo stuttering with their returns.

Dragonera....the thing is he will require high wages for this league and i cant see Sol accepting a short term contract. Next season when hopefully in the premiership he will usut be a waste of space getting ample wages in the reserves or bench. I would prefer killgallon on lower wages and with a bright future. But that requires money Mr Ashley!

Kilgallon would be a decent signing I think, however, as Ed Harrisson has pointed out, he's been part of a very leakey Sheffield United defence.

I will say take him only because of what is happening when Taylor and Collocini get injured but again on a pay per play basis or on a short rolling contract.
