Kevin Nolan knows what it means to Newcastle

Words by Kevin Doocey on .

Yesterday Newcastle again fought their way to a victory in rather undesirable conditions, in Deepdale. Kevin Nolan turned in his 9th goal of the season and again leads the scoring charts. From the first whistle, it was a game that could go either way but the further the game progressed, you just felt that a goal was coming for the Toon. Indeed it did come, and it quite a tasty goal to say the least. Nolan swivelled before swerving it beyond Preston’s #1. To be fair to Preston, I can only recount two chances in the whole match where they could’ve scored, Neil Mellor’s 1 on 1 against Kadar and Eddie Nolan attempt straight at Harper.

Saying that, it could’ve been one of those games where Preston stole it at the death but luckily with fifteen minutes to go, Nolan grabbed what proved to be the only goal in the game.

His celebration said it all, and he knew what a win away at Preston meant to the travelling Toon fans. They were there in an abundance and again showed why Newcastle United is such a special club.

After a poor first season in one which ended up with us being relegated, Kevin Nolan has really turned things around, but then again you’d expect that when he’s playing in a division lower than expected.

Jonas was up to his usual tricks and missed a chance at the death, ballooning it high into the travelling Geordies but it didn’t matter as Newcastle grabbed another clean sheet and another precious win.

These are the wins that will prove vital come May, and as I said in yesterdays article, we might look back at the Preston game in 2010, when hopefully, we’ll be nearing a return to the top flight.

Comments welcome 🙂

While yesterday was hardly a steam roller job, I left the game content with a job well done and somewhat shocked by some of the post match reaction. I was critical of Hughton in the opening months for our one dimentional, route one approach to every game, however in recent i've noticed a change. Looking at our last three victories as a case in point we have actually started to get the ball down and play abit more making us far more effective and controlling. I had become used to watching every game and wearing my fingers to the knub worrying that a goal could come at anytime and from anywhere. This season watching a game i get a different kind of feeling. Looking at yesterday there never really felt (other than one or two brief scares) that Preston were going to trouble us..even ambling towards the end of the game I was still confident we would score. The feeling in the squad is different, we finally have a group of players that understand what it means to don the black and white. The bottom line of all this being that it was another sturdy away victory, against another team that i believe will be in or around the playoffs and promotion spots. Alongside victories away at Cardiff, Sheffield United and the point taken at West Brom I'd say we're in better shape than any of us would have dared to believe in at the start of the season. Another good victory and another big step towards promotion..Howay the lads!

Also in response on the Harewood attack, while i agree he certainly isnt good enough to be kept on board i think his performances have steadilly improved. Yesterday he didnt win enough in the air that could be buildt upon and he did seem to lose the ball a few times. However his link up play was slightly better and he placed a few good balls out to the wing on a few occasions that gave Jonas a chance to whip a ball in..which more times than not ended in a corner. Fortunately he also heard Nolans call to leave it in time to let the ball drop to him or we could have been discussing a different result. Best thing to do would be to give him the support while he's here, im sure the confidence boost wouldnt hurt, then peddle him back off to Villa in january. Simple.

In my opinion, Jonas had a poor, terrible display yesterday. He's lost the ball many times and ended up producing nothing for us. And honestly, what was that goal he missed at the end of the game?!

Agree, Harewood has never been a great technical player relying on a more physical game, watched him give Shay a bad injury at Upton Park and it`s becoming obvious he will never be a crowd favorite, many already getting on his case. We need help in regards to goalscoring, apart from Ranger (not quite ready yet) not impressed by any of the others. Have to say we are playing better defensively, probably has more to do with the opposition I think. There`s still a lot of games to be played, but this side seems to be capeable of scraping a win, although ugly at times. However, would`nt want to compete in the PL with this side, just not good enough, need to unload the deadwood and strengthen, in order to survive that critical first season. Hope that`s understood by "the man".

Agreed, I think these away wins will shape our season. We're strong at home and we've been pretty solid away from home. Need to keep it up though.
