It’s only a matter of time before Leon Best starts scoring

Best - Only needs his first goal for the club and more will follow

A lot of people have doubted the talent of Leon Best in the last few weeks and are concerned that he might have been a poor signing from Chris Hughton. Leon arrived on Tyneside in a dream move (for him) on the last day of the transfer window in January of this year. The former Coventry striker had scored reached double figures in the league with Coventry up until his move but he is yet to bag his first goal for Newcastle United in what’s been a very successful Coca Cola Championship campaign.

For me, it’s only a matter of time before the Irishman scores his first goal in Black & White, and when he hits hie debut goal then I’m very confident it won’t be his last. We’ve seen it through the years that a lot of strikers only need one goal for belief and they can go on and score bucket-loads.

To be honest, I’d go as far as to say that if Shola Ameobi was fit all season, he would be top scorer in the Coca Cola Championship as of now. Kevin Nolan has bagged quite a few goals, with Peter Lovenkrands and Andy Carroll very close, if not already in double figures for their tally this season.

It’s great to see that we’re scoring goals in abundance and indeed on a side-note, good to see that we’re looking at young promising talents to bolster our squad with come the summer. Our latest target is rumoured to be Lille’s Eden Hazard,m who many will know for his great potential rating on Football Manager 2010 and indeed FIFA 10.

Whether we’ll actually go out and buy these guys is another matter but it’s always encouraging to see that we are taking a look at them, Graham Carr, Newcastle United’s chief scout in particular.

With Scunthorpe on Wednesday in another must-win game, we might just see Leon Best get his first goal for the Toon Army, and reward the brilliant support from the wonderful fans all season.

Comments welcome 🙂

Couldn't agree more. Also, whilst he hasn't scored, he has covered his tracks relatively well with some good link up play. Give the lad time. When he starts costing us points i will start scrutinizing his performances more thoroughly.

Didn't Leon Best set up the goal against Swansea, with a cross, in which could out to be a vital point. I like him, just wish he would get his first goal sooner rather than later to calm the pressure on him.

Wishful thinking, I fear. Best has scored 10 goals in 30 or so appearances this season, making him an OK player at Championship level. We signed him on a 3.5 year contract (I think), but I’ve seen no evidence to suggest that he will be able to cut it in the Premiership – Hughton obviously thinks otherwise. He is already a bit-part player for Newcastle, so if he isn’t good enough to hold down a place in the team this season, what chance does he have next season? Our other targets during January (Beckford and Moses) might have been able to make the step up to the Premiership. When we didn’t get either of those we should have just given up on signing another striker in January, the better option being to leave it until the summer and seeing who becomes available once we have (hopefully) won promotion. I really don’t know why we signed Best. We already have Lovenkrands, Carroll and Ameobi ahead of him in the pecking order. And is he really any better than Ranger? We had the perfect opportunity to give Ranger a chance to develop, by letting him have some time on the pitch in a team that is doing well / creating chances etc. But instead we’ve just wasted money on a striker who is probably going to turn out to be useless to us, and at the same time stunted the development of one of our up-and-coming youngsters.

I don't think he has had enough minutes on the pitch yet to decide he isn't good enough, he has often come on late with the game won. He is an honest player who should not be judged on goals alone, his ability to hold the ball up and bring others in to play is excellent, he is very much a team player, this sort of thing is often ignored when you are a striker not scoring. His cross for Carroll against Swansea was excellent and a sign of what he can do and I think if he is given more time on the pitch he will come good.
