Newcastle United need to buy this Summer if we want to stay up

Words by Kevin Doocey on .

Owen - We don’t want too many signings similar to this guy anytime soon

The day we splashed a record-breaking £15m to bring Alan Shearer to Newcastle from Premier League winning Blackburn Rovers, the footballing world came to a standstill and admired the Tyneside team for their courage in doing so, or at least we like to think they did! What a signing Alan Shearer turned about to be though, a true predator in front of goal and one of the best English strikers ever, if not the. We seemed to be quite pleased with the way that signing so we went and bought ourselves a £17m Michael Owen, £10m Albert Luque and an £8m Jean-Alain Boumsong, all of which turned out to be a lot less desirable than their price tags.

However, in the last few years we’ve calmed down just a little and indeed this year, the big spending stopped. We stuck to free-transfers and two million pound signings and we’re back in the Premier League because of it.

The news in the last couple of days is that Chris Hughton has been handed £15m to keep Newcastle United in the Premier League and he’ll have to squeeze every penny he can out of it.

Speaking about the transfer market today, he said :

“As per normal these talks are ongoing with the chairman and the owner but we know they are different times these days,’

“I think certainly the days of the sums of big transfers and the big transfer kitties – not only for Newcastle but for everybody – they are a thing of the past. I think you have to spend and look to improve but you have to do it wisely.

_ “What I am conscious of is that we have a real competitive squad that has generated a really good momentum this season and what we have had is players who have also developed this season and there is a group of lads and a squad that I have that deserve an opportunity.”

We’ll certainly need to buy as my headline suggests and buy big if you ask me. The likes of Kevin Nolan, Fabricio Coloccini and Alan Smith will find it hard in the Premier League again so let’s not be fooling ourselves in thinking they’ll be leading stars.

We have faith in all of our squad for the forthcoming season but there’s a huge amount of work to be done with this side if we want to avoid relegation. We need a striker, and a proven one. That itself will be a challenge.

If we do manage to buy and buy wisely, which I’m sure Chrissy Hughton will indeed do then we’ve every chance of being a Premier League come May 2011.

Comments welcome 🙂

There is no doubt we will bring in players to compete with the Premier League, but if your expecting 10 million pound signings or more your having a laugh. The squad we have is competant to keep us up. I have no doubt about that. Supporters need to temper their expectations. Our mission next season is to stay up. Spend wisely and stay up, therefor giving us a platform to get more funds in and spend a little more the year after and aim for a mid table/top 10 league position. There has been talk of a 5 year plan to get to Europe, I can see how the club is going to do this, but some need to realise, we need to be smart about it. We have a group of lads that are professional and work hard to get the job done. I have no doubt we will stay up with minimal amount of transfers in, as this bunch of lads are capable of that. We will spend probably no more than 10-12 million pounds and bring in a cbosman and a couple of loans. That would give us a sizeable head start if we stay up to build a football team capable of getting us to Europe in the next 5 years. Temper expectations Newcastle fans, next year won't be smooth sailing, and we will battle hard for Victories, but long term, it is the absolute right approach.

hahahaha NUFC....... 1 million for Nicky Maynard???? What planet do you live on m8; especially if your wanting to sell Besty for 1.5 million???? Fulham were interested in Maynard last summer and were quoted 5 million by Bristol City; after the season he's just had i think you'd be looking at 5 million at the very least to even get Bristol city to start talking! quality championship player; but unproven in the PL. Tommy Smith wouldn't get into my northern league side!!! Fully in agreement with trying to take Cleverly on loan; as well as securing Joe Ledley on a free (although after having a six million pound bid turned down by stoke city last summer i think they will be sniffing around him again). For me Vela on Loan for the season; Ledley on a free transfer; then i'd spend the entire budget on two quality players! First and foremost i'd sign Curtis Davies from Villa. Your probably looking at 5-6 million. We would stand a chance of getting him to as Villa need to sell; he is not first choice and is behind both Dunne and Collins. Secondly; we need a PL striker who can score sufficient goals to keep us in the division. The obvious choice despite him now being 29 is Robbie Keane. 6-8 million and i believe tottenham would sell. If robbie just wants to play football and isn't motivated by money then he is our man. 35k per week and first choice football infront of 50,000 passionate fans for the next three seasons could sway the deal. In's; Robbie Keane; 6-8 million - Guarentee'd goals Curtis Davies; 4-6 million Joe Ledley; Free Transfer Tom Cleverly; Loan Those four players would add to the squad; for me.

SO WHATS IT GOING TO BE "SPECULATION" FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, DO WE HAVE TO READ EVERY WOULD BE SCOUT/MANAGERS ASSESMENT OF WHO WE NEED AND WHAT IT WILL COST US. ZZZZZZZZzzzzzz! booring !

I cant see Keane joining us. Newcastle will not buy any players older than 25-26. Should try to loan hungry young players like Vela Macheda pacheco

I hope we stay well clear of dramatic signings that we've gone for in the past and build a squad slowly and do it the right way. £15m is plenty enough if Hughton is careful enough, especially as I can see a couple going out. Scour the free transfer market and get some freebies in, while take one or two loans in from the big teams. Wilshere, Macheda etc...need games at Premiership level, lets offer them that opportunity while we move a step closer to offloading rubbish like Butt, Smith & Shola (who if fit will struggle to score against proper defenders)
